North Shore Education Committee for the Prevention of Disordered Eating

Jessie’s Legacy also chairs the North Shore Education Committee for the Prevention of Disordered Eating. While not a program as such, it is a collective of North Shore agencies working together to bring awareness to and a coordinated effort to prevent eating disorders in our community. Other members of this committee are School Districts 44 and 45, Vancouver Coastal Health, BC Dairy

The North Shore Education Committee on Eating Disorders began over 10 years ago as a response to a growing need for community stakeholders doing eating disorders prevention and counselling work with children and youth in North and West Vancouver, to meet together and brainstorm, learn collectively, and centralize messaging.

Today, the committee is run out of the Jessie’s Legacy Eating Disorders Prevention Program at Family Services of the North Shore and provides a real opportunity for learning and being creative within the field. The group is comprised of therapists, school counsellors and nurses, dietitians, and representatives from other groups with interest in the work. We meet 6 times a year to discuss the work members are doing, to create and plan initiatives, to problem-solve, and to find ways to ensure that important messaging around eating disorders awareness and prevention is as current and cohesive as it can possibly be.

While the group remains primarily a North and West Vancouver initiative, no other group like it exists within the province and stakeholders from other areas often attend.
