What Is Prevention
Many factors contribute to the development of an eating disorder and therefore many factors have to be looked at when discussing prevention.
The Jessie’s Legacy approach to the prevention of eating disorders and disordered eating is to bring awareness to the both the risk and protective factors involved in the development of disordered eating and eating disorders. Risk factors include dieting, body dissatisfaction, thin-ideal internalization and low self-esteem. Protective factors are connectedness to family and community, parental support and acceptance of body-size diversity and media literacy. The single most important defence against disordered eating – the family meal.
